Division 2 Councillor Owen-Jones refuses to act!

A former Monterey Keys resident confirmed that the infamous stink in the area of Monterey Keys, Helensvale is as a result of regular raw sewage spills from an overloaded local pump.

There are numerous infections of all different types associated with faecal contamination including but not limited to cholera, diarrhea such as E.coli diarrhea, salmonella or shigella; viral infections including rotavirus, norovirus (which causes food poisoning on cruise ships), and hepatitis A and E; parasites such as giardia and cryptosporidium, and various different kinds of worms including pinworms, ascariasis and tapeworms.

He stated that the smell at one point became intolerable and he and his family and other residents were at the point of vomiting. A friend and neighbour at the time, who was also a senior agent of the Australian Federal Police decided to investigate for himself. He entered the council land at the worst point of the smell and discovered a broad area of untreated sewage floating on the lake. He said that the entire area was filthy with toilet paper, condoms and sanitary pads spread through the mangroves of the internationally protected and designated fish habitat of Coombabah Lake. He discovered that the pump located nearby was undersized and unable to cope with the waste from Helensvale/Monterey Keys area, which when over capacity at peak times in the mornings and evenings, spilled raw sewage into the lake.

He discovered that at peak times the waste spills into an overflow pond, which often then flows into the Coombabah Lake. Council has been aware of the problem for several years. The resident stated that some of the former Councillors admitted knowing of the sewage spills and that former Cr Colin Kleinschmidt confirmed that the Council was well aware of the situation and that the pump and the mains were far too small to cope with the huge amount of residential growth in the area. When the issue was raised recently with another former Councillor, he too confirmed that GC Council knows of the problems and that nothing is being done to upgrade the pumps. He explained that Council has simply allocated part of the internationally protected wetland as a sewage overflow pond. However, the volume of waste is so great at times that it regularly spills into the lake.

The former resident stated that GC Council’s standard response to complaints is that the smell was due to rotting vegetation from the Mangroves. He also stated that he and his family have traveled extensively throughout SE Asia, including the Mekong delta in South Vietnam and the city of Hue in the North, Kampuchea and China and nowhere did the mangroves ever smell like sewerage.

While passing the area of the old Crab Farm on Brisbane road recently at about 8am he again noticed an overwhelming smell of sewage. He described the location as having access via a dirt road with a locked boom gate. It is also the site of another pump.

Given this latest discovery combined with the other recent events including the dumping of toxic dredge spoil into the creek, significant volumes of C class treated sewage flowing undetected into the creek over three years and the concentration of contaminants as a result of restricted tidal flow, the potential for serious health risks to residents, visitors and overseas tourists is reaching crisis proportions. Urgent comprehensive testing needs to be completed across the waterway.

If you are concerned about the potential for serious health risks affecting yourselves and your families please lodge your individual and urgent demands for action including:
1. Comprehensive water testing across the Coombabah and Coomera River estuary, local canals and the Broadwater in the Paradise Point and Coombabah areas and announce all results publicly. Tests to include Pharmaceutical and illicit drugs, full spectrum sewerage related tests, Acid Sulfate (Sulphuric Acid) and other toxic mineral contamination.

2. Comprehensive testing of the marine life in our waterways to include traces of each of the above form of contaminants.
