At last, the truth, the proof! False and misleading statement by Councillors and City Hall…’C’ class treated sewage “is almost good enough to drink”…IT’S NOT!!
Whose responsible for investigating? Whomever you are…ACT NOW to fix this damned mess. Sack who you need to, jail who you need to, but fix it…or the responsibility for any incidents of serious illness or death rests with you.
The attached extract from GCCC’s Water and Sewerage Plan (and file download) clearly states that A+ treated sewage for watering vegetables, washing vehicles etc was supplied from only one plant on the GC, Pimpama. THIS WAS DECOMMISSIONED IN 2017 to reduce costs, leaving only class B to D available and NOT FOR RELEASE into a Catchment. ‘C’ class treated sewage is the second lowest rating. The broken main had been flowing into the Coombabah internationally protected and designated fish habitat unchecked for 2-3 years from a broken main on the boundary of Serenity Cove. IT PRESENTED A HEALTH RISK FOR THAT ENTIRE PERIOD!
EVEN WORSE is GCCC and our elected representatives, the Councillors we elect to represent us particularly in matters of PUBLIC HEALTH, instead of admitting the event and committing publicly to improve management and compliance processes, attempted to downplay the incident by making FALSE AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS.
The Councillors whose divisions border this catchment and who have been fully aware of citizen concerns for the past 12 months and either not responded or failed to follow up on effective action are Cr. William Owen-Jones (Div 2), Cr. Cameron Caldwell (Div 3), Cr. Kristyn Boulton (Div 4).
GCCC COULD HAVE ISSUED TEMPORARY HEALTH WARNINGS within the catchment, around Paradise Point and the Broadwater, followed by comprehensive water testing to prove it was safe for recreational use. THEY DIDN’T!
GCCC INSTEAD REFUSED to carry out comprehensive water quality tests and testing for possible fish and crab contamination, IGNORING MY REPEATED URGENT PLEAS. Even if the results had been negative it would have given the public peace of mind.
WORSE STILL…is to learn that in 2017 a decision was made by GCCC to reduce costs by REDUCING THE FREQUENCY OF WATER QUALITY TESTING FROM MONTHLY TO QUARTERLY!!
EVEN MORE HORRIFYING was the decision in 2017 to cut costs by CEASING ALL E-Coli TESTING ACROSS ALL CATCHMENTS with the exception of designated swimming enclosures!!
THIS IS A BLATANT BREACH OF TRUST…If you believe that you or your family have suffered over the past three years, illness such as Giardia or other faecal related disease, skin rash, skin burning or other symptoms as a result of contact with or swallowing recreational water please contact Qld Health immediately. Also, contact:
– Minister for Local Government with a view to suspending the entire GCCC
– Minister for Health to conduct a comprehensive and public investigation and health audit into the health and safety of the Gold Coast Waterways.
– Qld Crime and Corruption Commission and demand that they immediately sack the Council and its Executive Officers and install an Administrator.
– The Qld Premier and demand immediate investigations and provide answers to the public.
– The Prime Minister and demand immediate investigations.
– National TV and radio stations. Don’t waste your time with local media. It is obvious from recent behavior that they will protect their revenue stream by protecting the current elected GC Council administration and their media budget.
I can’t believe it has come to this…The Council resembles a third world administration. BUT, we are a democracy and it is our lives, our families and our community and our responsibility. Please don’t sit back any longer. If anyone in your family or community suffers or dies from an illness that may be related to sewage contaminated recreational water brought about by this Council’s negligence and if you fail to take every action you could, you will live with it for the rest of your lives…PLEASE ACT NOW.

At last, Cr Kristyn Boulton has just provided an informed response to at least one of my treated sewage questions. It took most of the day yesterday, it took persistence, patience and putting up with constant attempts by some thug called Danny Silk to bully, humiliate and deny the situation. [response follows] “The City views recycled water as a climate resilient water source that is a valuable and reliable resource for non-drinking purposes. The City of Gold Coast is in fact one of the largest users of recycled water among urban water utilities. Whilst recycled water is not suitable for drinking we do endeavor to utilize as much of it where suitable – including for irrigation, manufacturing, agriculture and it is used by many organizations on the Gold Coast on a by application basis. Unfortunately, there are significant legislative and economic barriers in place which make transporting our recycled water to consumers in other regions not possible. Ta KB” Thank you, that is all I have been asking for. You are the only local Councillor to take responsibility for responding. However, as we know, treated sewage as you state “is not suitable for drinking”. That leaves two other outstanding questions a) Why did GCCC stop testing recreational waters for e-Coli in November 2017? Can you please request that they return to a regular testing regime. This is taking high risks with public health and b) Why has GCCC never made e-Coli test results available to the public? Can you please request that these are published regularly so that us mature adults can make an informed decision as to whether we or our children take the risk to enter the water. I will forget any further attempts to prompt a response from Cameron Caldwell or Owen-Jones, they simply refuse to take responsibility or address the issues honestly. Thanks, Steve
Folks, the Director of GC Water has willingly cooperated and shared information I have requested NONE OF WHICH HAS BEEN USED IN EITHER OF THESE WATER QUALITY POSTS. I believe he is highly professional but constrained. I would find it hard to believe that he has been complicit in attempts to hide any water quality results from the public.
Steve Jeffery awesome information for the general public. I’m an marine/environmental scientist and have worked in water quality labs with another council in NSW whom is maybe a little more environmentally conscious regarding its waterways but equally corrupt. No ecoli testing really? Wow!
If what you say is true, and I do not at al doubt it, people should be extremely concerned and anyone in those areas should be following your advice asap especially given the contamination has been long term. All councils are unconstitutional and therefore the corruption is rife. Not sure you can expect anything from the Qld state government as they are equally if not more so corrupt. Deleted posts and comments shows exactly how corrupt they are and that they (the GCCC and Counsellors) are only out to protect themselves and their under the table revenue streams! They are a disgrace!
This is ridiculous how did the council get away with doing this they should be held more accountable for their actions. If the CCC doesn’t investigate this water issue then the Federal Government health scientists should be brought in and investigate the blatant disregard for public health.

Class action needs to be undertaken! Apart from ignoring pleas by concerned residents, GCCC blatantly lie and fob this off as if it’s nothing! This is of major concern to the whole Gold Coast, Wetlands and our oceans! If that happened around the Great Barrier Reef this Council would be crucified by authorities! Once again the Gold Coast Mayor is displaying an attitude that reflects he is above the law.
Go all out everyone and bring this Council down!
What about the health department? Are they aware of this? https://www.goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au/our-services/public-health are apparently concerned with environmental health hazards and water quality and fluoridation (are they separate?)

Not only are they skimping on the cost of that, they are skimping on everything else Council are supposed to do and spending money on unwanted and unneeded infrastructure that appears to benefit the developers that donated to their campaigns and disadvantages the constituents who they are meant to represent
The people living in that area, or using it for recreational use need to take out a class action
