Serenity Cove Developer Sime Darby Property [SDP] has sent its own team to Australia to conduct investigations into the destruction of the Coombabah Ramsar internationally protected Wetlands and Designated Fish Habitat.

AT A BREAKFAST MEETING ON FRIDAY, a senior spokesman for the developer stated that they were saddened to learn what had happened. He said that Sime Darby Property had no employees in Australia and had relied on a consulting firm and contractors to deliver the Serenity Lakes development. He stated that SDP has an outstanding track record with regard to the environment. He explained that Malaysia faces similar environmental destruction as Australia the result of failed government policies and ineptitude. He explained that to help counter this SDP’s environment group scours the country to find rare and threatened plant species, cultivates them then integrates and protects them within their new developments. To demonstrate their commitment, the company has brought a team to Australia to make their own enquiries. He also stated that the biggest hurdle he has faced to date is prompting a response from Gold Coast City Council that won’t return his calls [this statement has since been corrected as other team members were dealing with GCCC]. He concluded by stating that they are appointing a local 3rd Party consulting group to conduct thorough investigations and report back. We agreed to stay in contact.
IT MAKES AN INTERESTING COMPARISON that here we have a developer who sends a specialist group half way around the world to discover first hand, the cause of an environmental tragedy and then we have the Gold Coast City Council who through self-interest or arrogance refused to send someone on a 20 minutes drive to prevent it.
THE LEAD UP TO THIS MEETING, is that in early October and out of sheer desperation, I began to research the entity I believed to be the developer of Serenity Cove, Sime Darby Berhad. I discovered that SDB is a successful, proud international conglomerate, based in Malaysia. The company has been established for almost 110 years with annual revenues of more than AUD12.5 billion. They are committed to and can demonstrate the benefits of balancing economic aspirations with social and environmental imperatives embraced and governed by their Board of Directors.
ON OCTOBER 05, I CONTACTED THE GROUP CEO who I perceived to be a highly professional and effective leader. I outlined the issues to him and stated that I do not believe either he or his company would knowingly nor willingly permit the destruction of such a significant, unique and commercially important natural asset as the Coombabah Catchment and Designated Fish Habitat. I stated that I understood that at times global corporations must rely on Country Managers to represent them and that certain activities may not always be brought to the attention of Group CEO. I asked if he would be willing to arrange an internal enquiry and depending on the findings work with me to help with remediation works.
HE RESPONDED PERSONALLY and almost immediately, expressed his concern and empathized with the situation. He stated that he had visited the area and knows that it is a wonderful part of the world. He explained that SDB restructured in late 2016, that all property interests and operations were transferred to Sime Darby Property and that SDB Group no longer holds an interest in SD Property or other property development operations. He stated that regardless, he had taken the opportunity to personally raise the matter with the CEO of Sime Darby Property as well as a board member, for which I am grateful.
IT IS TOO EARLY TO PREDICT AN OUTCOME, but I take heart in the fact that there are still individuals of influence with the courage and professionalism to embrace responsibility and take action. My experience to date has been that the executives of Sime Darby and Sime Darby Property are individuals of the highest calibre and integrity.

Wow how extraordinary that a world leading developer has to travel such a distance to see first hand the devistation caused by the lack of compliance to the strict guidelines stated in the 121 page report by GCCC. Like you stated Steve a twenty minute drive to check on compliance which I was lead to believe is compulsory stage by stage on ANY building site! Lazy Council actions again!
