Shocking discovery on banks of Coombabah Creek and Serenity Cove Development
Shocking new discoveries have been made by a concerned resident of The Estuary, a small, unique eco estate at Coombabah. The resident, a retired senior engineer, lives directly opposite the Serenity Lakes estate. Significant mud flows have been observed flowing into Coombabah Creek from the direction of the estate boundary on two separate occasions and regularly reported to GC Council.
Disappointed that Council was doing nothing to investigate or attempt to mitigate damage, he undertook to complete his own investigations in his kayak over several weeks.
He discovered bright red mud on the bank of the creek on Sunday. The mud matches the sightings reported by residents in early 2016 which at the time coincided with Stage II earthworks and building of the boat lock at Serenity Lakes Estate.
The mud flow resulted in an increase in mud/sand banks in the creek prompting rapid erosion of the opposite, Coombabah bank, the rapid depletion in fish and crab numbers and deterioration in the health of mud crabs caught in the area.
The red mud bears the characteristics of Iron sulfide, which when exposed to air, oxidises and produces large amounts of sulfuric acid. This is generally associated with deep dredge spoil.
DES are investigating the mud and GC Catchments are attempting to engage with Development and Environmental Compliance officers to inspect the site.
SHORT TERM EFFECTS: Fish kills, fish disease, mass mortalities of microscopic organisms, increased light penetration due to water clarity, loss of acid-sensitive crustaceans, destruction of fish eggs.
LONG TERM EFFECTS: Loss of habitat, persistent iron coatings, alterations to water plant communities, invasion of acid-tolerant water plants, reduced spawning success due to stress, reduced food resources, dominance of acid-tolerant plankton species, growth abnormalities, reduced growth rates, changes in food chain, damaged and undeveloped eggs, higher water temperatures due to increased light penetration, increased availability of toxic elements.
