Coombabah environmental crisis – Questions for Councillor Caldwell (Div 3).
Now that you have finally acknowledged the serious environmental damage to the Coombabah Catchment we would like answers to the following:
a) Thur 14 Mar 2019 – I forwarded to you a detailed summary of the emerging crisis and damage to the Catchment. I sought your advice and guidance as to how I could move it forward. WHY DID YOU NOT RESPOND?
b) Fri 22 Mar – I forwarded an update re GCWA and attempts to contact DES. I also advised that no response had been received from GCCC. WHY DID YOU NOT RESPOND?
c) Wed 07 Aug – I forwarded to you an urgent update describing what had by now turned into a catastrophe. I notified you that DES and DAF were arranging an inspection and that Council had still taken no effective action to investigate or mitigate the damage. WHY DID YOU NOT RESPOND?

– Why, at the meeting of the Paradise Point Progress Association as reported in the minutes, were you evasive in answering questions about the Coombabah Creek crisis by stating “There are some concerns about water quality and the Waterways Authority don’t want to dredge a natural waterway”. You have been aware of all of the facts for months. Your answer was incomplete, uninformative and as a result misleading.
– Why did you also state words to the effect that there was “very little interest in the problem”? This is clearly untrue and also misleading. Is there something you are not disclosing or is there something significant to hide?

– Why, at the meeting of the Paradise Point Progress Association a month later did you suddenly decide to make the disclosure about Council receiving complaints [about the catchment] and they are being investigated by Dept. of Environment and Science? You speak as if this is all new to you. Were you attempting to keep your constituents ill informed?
– Why too, would you state once again that Waterways won’t dredge because the creek is a protected area? You know that Waterways have a limited budget and limited authority. You knew that Waterways had spoken with me and had been highly supportive. You know that investigations by DES are still in progress and that no remediation plan has been prepared. You again provided only a partial response.
– Did you suddenly discover the significance of the catchment or did you choose to ignore it in the past for some reason you are not disclosing?
Councillor, I am a resident within your division. I have tried frantically to engage with you and Council since March this year in an effort to prompt effective action and mitigate the damage.
– WHY DID YOU CHOOSE NOT TO RESPOND?
– WHY DID YOU CHOOSE NOT TO INITIATE ACTION?
Either way Councillor, your behaviour shows nothing but contempt for your constituents. You continue to insult us and treat us and the rest of the people of the Gold Coast like fools. Another term in public office is looking less likely for you especially as Mayor.
We need answers because we have a right to know. We await your reply.
