Internationally protected Coombabah catchment destruction – Response from Mayor Tom Tate (Just Received).

“City officers are working with the State Government officers on the investigation. The State Government are [sic] leading the investigation given its primarily their responsibility for such environs, but Council is in their [sic] as a partner surrounding these concerns of sedimentation in Coombabah Creek and Lake.

I believe you met with two Catchment Management Officers on site to inspect the area after your initial enquiry. Council’s Catchment Management Unit corresponded with all relevant State departments and local experts on the matter.

Our Catchment Management Officers have been continuing to coordinate with the State (DES, DAF, Marine Parks) and completed another site inspection by boat with them in late August.

The State Government provided a summary of the site visit to stakeholders (LG and State) and this investigation noted that sedimentation was occurring, but was likely to be predominately driven by tidal movement from downstream and not deposition from upstream.

Our Catchment Management Officers have also organised inspections of the Council led issues you also referred to such as tidal exchange structure for the Myola Drain and development compliance of upstream development. No issues have been so far identified at the tidal structures.

We are still waiting on response from Development Compliance.

The State and the City are progressing actions to investigate sedimentation of Coombabah Creek to further identify any possible actions. This will be a long term investigation given the system’s complexity.

I hope to have further information next week as further investigations are planned later this week with State and LG coastal engineers.
