Another shocking discovery – high volume treated sewage from broken Grey Water main flowing into protected catchment for years.
The same resident of The Estuary, a retired senior engineer discovered a huge volume of water flowing from a large hole in the bank of Serenity Lake Estate and escaping into Coombabah Creek and Ramsar Protected Catchment.
The GC Council Catchments Manager this morning stated that the flow is ‘Grey Water’ from a break in a privately owned line at the Serenity Cove site. This was later updated to treated ‘Sewage’ water. The water ‘C’ grade and one of the poorest grades, is pumped from the treatment plant and is intended to service golf courses at Hope Island. New vegetation growth in the immediate vicinity suggests that this had continued unchecked for 2-3 years.
The pump has been switched off and the flow stopped awaiting repairs to be effected by the private owner.
GCCC reported the environmental breach to DES. Catchments will begin testing for water quality and mineral levels tomorrow.
The Catchments manager is attempting to engage GC Development and Environmental Compliance Officers to inspect the site.

Lots of algae break outs in Broadwater as well. Wondering if there is a link?
Thank you for not giving up and fighting for this precious ecosystem ????
Grace Middleton –
Also great job finding the leak & bringing it to the attention of GCCC ????
If the GCCC Catchment Manager knew about this then why have they waited until shamed by a member of the public before doing something about it? Or if the GCCC Catchment Manager has only just found out about it why has it been damaged for years and not rectified?? Would like to hear how GCCC can justify neglecting this vital sea life nursery. It’s just not good enough, the GC is more than just beaches, nightlife & tourists.
What a disgrace.

What an absolute shambles! The negligence is shocking.
Wow….grey water would have contributed to all sorts of algae and unwanted growth!
