The Coombabah Lake and Creek is one of the most important fish nurseries in South East Queensland.
The catchment is a primary source of Whiting, Flathead, Bream, Mangrove Jack, Trevally, Queenfish, Estuary Cod, Squid and Mud Crab stock to the Morton Bay fisheries.
A significant volume of black mud spreading into the creek over the past 10 months has destroyed it. New mud/sand bars are severely restricting tidal flows at all but high tides and also restricting access to much of the marine life including fish, dolphins, giant rays and sharks. The few remaining mud crabs are sick.
This catastrophe will seriously impact stock levels for commercial and recreational product in the Moreton Bay fisheries for years to come.
The lake and creek catchment is part of the Morton Bay Marine Park, is a protected fish habitat under the Queensland Fisheries Act and a protected marine conservation and habitat zone under the Morton Bay Marine Park Zoning Plan. Coombabah Wetlands, Lake and Creek are also protected by the Ramsar international convention for significant wetlands since 1993.
Over the past 10 months black mud has destroyed this valuable fish habitat. There are NO SIGNS OF MARINE LIFE in the waterway.
The Gold Coast City Council has overall responsibility for managing this unique and irreplaceable natural asset AND IS LETTING IT DIE!
QLD Dept of Environment and Science and also Agriculture and Fisheries conducted an onsite inspection and agreed that some of their findings are cause for serious concern. They have also agreed to continue investigations to identify the source and agree an appropriate remediation plan.
