Plastics Contamination Update – 240Kg of plastic waste on the banks of Coombabah Creek and Lake has been removed by Council crews.

The video shows two large rubbish barges returning from their marathon cleanup in the Lake and Creek during the Christmas/New year period.

Credit for this outstanding initiative goes to the Executive Coordinator Environment, Gold Coast Water and Waste. This young man has shown himself to be at all times, professional, knowledgeable, polite and patient. He has a strong connection with and empathy for our environment. Q…What arrangements have been put in place to ensure an effective ongoing maintenance program?

A…There are no regular clean ups presently planned in Coombabah Creek. Clean ups are undertaken on a needs basis until arrangements are made to include Coombabah Creek in the regular clean up. A new Clean-up contract is being discussed in the coming months.

Local residents inspected the various locations and confirmed that the cleanup showed a marked improvement with more work needed.

BACKGROUND: Plastic waste, the result of years of neglect, was discovered by local residents on the banks of Coombabah Creek and Lake in early October 2019 and reported to Council. The residents were investigating what is believed to be large areas of toxic Acid Sulfite soils on the boundary of Serenity Cove residential estate. They were also shocked to discover at the same time a major break in a treated sewage main. The main appeared to have been releasing large volumes of C class treated sewage illegally and undetected into the Coombabah protected catchment for several years.

SADLY, the Council CEO’s office seized control of the investigation of all outstanding issues (summarised in the post of late December).

I was then advised on Jan 29, that it would take nine weeks plus public holidays before they could provide a response. I was also instructed not to discuss any of the matters with council officers or councillors until after the response was released. That would have effectively quarantined the issues and silenced any further debate until after the Council elections.

I refused to accept the instructions as most issues posed a serious public health risk exposing the public to potentially fatal faecal related illnesses and a risk of contracting Ross River Virus and other mosquito borne illnesses throughout that time.

Ongoing enquiries revealed further lies and cover-ups and exposed the true extent of the subsequent catastrophic sewage network collapse on Feb 13. The city-wide failure of 91 pump stations and the overflow from the grossly under capacity treatment plant released tonnes of raw sewage into our storm-water drains, parks and waterways and contaminated more than 35 homes which were subsequently condemned.

I will continue to demand answers to the growing list of issues and will request the return of Joshua and his team to help coordinate further mitigation works and the reintroduction of recreational water quality testing including extensive E.coli/Enteroccoci testing across the city.

Concerned local residents are monitoring, recording and reporting on the condition of the catchment.
