Coombabah Ramsar protected lakelands and designated marine park fish habitat – An environmental and fisheries catastrophe!
Coombabah catchment is an internationally protected migratory bird habitat, designated fish habitat under the Queensland Fisheries Act, a protected marine conservation and habitat zone under the Moreton Bay Marine Park Zoning Plan and a Ramsar Internationally protected wetland of significance. It is also one of the most important fish nurseries in South East Queensland being a primary source of Whiting, Flathead, Bream, Mangrove Jack, Trevally, Queenfish, Estuary Cod, Squid and Mud Crab stock to the Morton Bay fisheries.
TOXIC MUD flowing into Coombabah Creek from the direction of Serenity Lake estate has destroyed our unique, internationally protected Coombabah Catchment.
This happened on two occasions beginning early 2016 and more recently in March this year.
The Coombabah Catchment is unique. It is a designated fish habitat under the Queensland Fisheries Act…A protected marine conservation and habitat zone under the Moreton Bay Marine Park Zoning Plan…An internationally protected migratory bird habitat…And a Ramsar Internationally protected wetland of significance…It is also one of the most important fish nurseries in South East Queensland being a primary source of Fish, Squid and Mud Crab to the Morton Bay fisheries.
This is an irreplaceable natural asset with considerable economic value to the Gold Coast and SE Moreton Bay.
Responsibility for managing this site is shared between Federal, State and Local Government…Gold Coast Council is responsible for day to day management, monitoring and environmental compliance.
Serenity Lake estate borders this Ramsar protected site and therefore Gold Coast Council has responsibility for monitoring compliance to ensure that there are no spills into Coombabah Creek. Compliance means DAILY monitoring during earthworks.
HOWEVER, IN EARLY 2016 residents watched in disbelief as bright orange mud flowed from the boundary of Serenity Lake Estate. The event coincided with Stage II earthworks and the building of the boat lock. The response I received from Catchments was that it was a natural event and that no action would be taken.
THE RESULT WAS a shallowing of the creek and Coombabah Lake, an increase in sandbanks, rapid erosion of the opposite residential bank, the destruction of established Melaleuca trees and a significant reduction in fish and crab numbers. We also became aware in September last year, that the Dolphins had stopped visiting due to the shallowness of the creek and lake.
IN JANUARY 2019, in an attempt to mitigate further damage and being mindful of Gold Coast Catchment’s earlier response, I began to send urgent requests to State Member for Broadwater,…Ramsar Australia,…Various Professors and other specialists at Griffith University,…and the Gold Coast Waterways Authority. Each of them responded quickly, expressed concern and offered suggestions as to the appropriate authority to take action.
THEN IN MARCH residents watched yet again, as a wall of black mud up to one metre high flowed from the direction of Serenity Lake estate. This time it coincided with final earthworks and preparation of the lake, which involved dredging.
On March 14, I sent an urgent warning to the Minister for Environment and Science and on the same day, Councillor Cameron Caldwell.
These included pleas for urgent action to help minimize damage…
Cr. Caldwell refused to respond to this and later urgent emails and The GOLD COAST CITY COUNCIL REFUSED TO TAKE EFFECTIVE ACTION.
Dept. of Environment and Science [DES] took ownership of the problem and commenced investigations. After a recent onsite visit with a team of scientists DES and Fisheries confirmed our observations, agreed to continue investigations and also prepare a draft remediation plan. GC Council are tagging along behind and attempting to shift the focus away from Serenity Lakes estate towards the Broadwater.
As a result of gross negligence or a more sinister motive, our internationally protected Catchment and one of the most important fish breeding grounds in SE Queensland is now destroyed. Tidal flow is restricted at all but high tide. The fish, crabs and water birds have all but disappeared.
