PART FIVE [Final] – EXPOSED!! Gold Coast Council’s years of cover-up, neglect and denials

Summary – The year in perspective

COOMBABAH ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE. Where it all started 12 months ago. The destruction of the Coombabah Catchment and designated fish habitat by what local residents observed as the potential illegal dumping of dredge spoil (huge volumes of black mud), estimated to be 60,000m3 or 6,000 truck loads.

The mud was observed by residents flowing into the creek from the boundary of the adjoining Serenity Cove residential lakes estate (in Division 2) during final earthworks preparations. After sending out multiple urgent alerts and requests GCCC failed to inspect the reported location, conduct soil core sampling as promised or conduct comprehensive water tests. They instead reported the incident as a natural event. Cr. Caldwell (Div3) failed to respond to any requests. Cr’s Owen-Jones (Div 2) handed-off the urgent alerts and failed to follow up on council action. Owen-Jones more recently stated blatantly on his FB page that “there is no evidence to support it…none”…Not surprising, since Council have refused to conduct the soil core testing and acid sulfate water tests at the reported location.

The result has been that effective tidal flow is now severely restricted at anything but high tide. The 19.6 sq km catchment being a major provider of fish, crab and prawn stock to the SE Moreton Bay fishery is no longer capable of supplying stock in sustainable numbers. DES and DAF after a scientific assessment were shocked at the state of the catchment and confirmed the dramatic reduction of marine and water bird life. This will impact commercial and recreational fishing in the area for years.

In addition, this event has also resulted in leaving large areas of mud exposed across the catchment offering a prime mosquito breeding ground in its current state.

To address these issues, urgent, shallow dredging of Coombabah Creek and Lake needs to begin immediately.

CURRENT STATUS: Council remains in denial, refuses to inspect the site, do soil core sampling as originally promised or conduct water sampling to test for Iron or Acid Sulfites, which when exposed to air converts into large volumes of sulphuric acid. The matter remains outstanding. However, current activity includes:

a) DES will continue to investigate in the new year now that GCCC has finally but belated provided a quote to supply and install tide measuring devices.

b) The initial report provided by GCCC Catchments Management Unit claiming that the incident was a natural event has after six months, was for some reason recently reviewed. I was advised that there appeared to be some conflicts of memory. I promptly responded with further evidence which I had provided at the time proving that the memory conflict was not on my part. I stated that the CMU officers I met didn’t appear to be the type to make misleading statements, that given Council’s behavior it was reasonable to suspect that a senior individual had instructed them which suggested an attempted cover up. The matter was immediately passed to GCCC Internal Audit Dept for investigation.
