PART THREE – EXPOSED!! Gold Coast Council’s years of cover-up, neglect and denials
Summary – The year in perspective
WHOLESALE PLASTICS CONTAMINATION ACROSS THE COOMBABAH CATCHMENT (Divisions 2, 3 and 4): During inspections by local residents huge volumes of plastic waste were discovered along the banks of Coombabah Creek and Lake. Much of this included large blocks of polystyrene, which was breaking down into micro-plastics and being blown into the water where it’s consumed by both fish and water birds. Concerns were raised with GCCC Waste and Water [responsible for catchments management]. The matter was immediately referred to DES and then the State’s Healthy Land and Water (HLW) unit [who have taken over responsibility for testing water across the Moreton Bay Marine Park]. Their tests DO NOT INCLUDE Enterococcci/E.coli and DO NOT INCLUDE the various catchments including Coombabah.
CURRENT STATUS: Wed, December 18. GCCC Waste and Water advised that Healthy Land and Water had arranged a one day cleanup [didn’t state where] and will advise GCCC early next year which remaining areas will be completed next. I will continue to follow up and post progress and aerial maps for everyone’s information.
DISCOVERY OF NEGLECTED UNDER ROAD WATER DUCTS. This recent discovery by a Helensvale resident revealed large areas of stagnant, putrid water laying in the under road concrete ducts on Brisbane Rd between the service station and Coombabah Creek bridge. The water was black and stank of sewage. It provides a huge mosquito breeding area, a serious public health risk and is possibly the source of the sewage like stink reported for years by Helensvale residents in the area known as the ‘Old Crab Farm’. Council has for years blamed the stink on mangroves. Mangroves can have a strong smell at certain times of the year as confirmed by both Council and DES. This resembles crude oil, but NOT SEWAGE. These findings were recorded and reported to both Council and DES for investigation.
CURRENT STATUS: Matter being investigated by GCCC. I will continue to follow up in the new year to ensure that the responsible authority(ies) regularly inspect and maintain these ducts in a healthy condition.

I used to live in Helensvale, and remember that awful smell……used to be stronger in the evening. That was ages ago. So sad it has gone on for this long. Finally, great to hear they GCCC are FINALLY going to address this issue.
