This is a plea for Universities or private labs to assist with testing our internationally protected Coombabah catchment for water quality and Acid Sulfate soils.
Treated sewage water has been found by scientists in Melbourne and overseas to contain high concentrates of up to 87 pharmaceutical and illicit drugs which cannot be removed by normal sewage treatment systems.
Families in the Paradise Point, Coombabah areas are reporting parasitic illness Giardia, rashes and skin burns from contact with the waters of the Coomera, Coombabah Estuary, canals and the Broadwater around Paradise Point.
Recent discoveries of high volumes of grey water flowing unchecked for up to three years into the internationally protected Coombabah catchment and the dumping of dredge spoil containing Iron and Acid Sulfate soils combined with reduced tidal flow must lead to an increased concentration of dangerous contaminants in this system.
The catchment is a designated fish habitat, nursery and primary provider of fish, mud crab and prawn stock to the Moreton Bay fisheries.
The Gold Coast Council has made no obvious or urgent attempt to test for any of these threats or issue warnings, nor do they appear to have alerted State Health authorities or Dept. of Agriculture and Fisheries.
We the residents must take the initiative to preserve our health and that of our families. If anyone has the facilities and willingness to assist with tests or can recommend someone who might, please contact me via the contacts page.
