While investigating damage to Coombabah Creek and Lake from suspected illegally dumped dredge spoil, a local retired senior engineer discovered an historic Aboriginal oyster midden on the bank of the creek.

This is a special part of the heritage of this protected area. It also demonstrates that the catchment was once healthy and bountiful. We both stood in awe. I could almost feel the presence of the many families that had sat here over generations.

The shocking thing to both of us is that the site is now surrounded by what must be kilograms of plastic waste, which extends along the bank all the way to the lake. This is just another example of the contempt with which Gold Coast City Council has treated yet another of its unique, natural assets.

This is an internationally protected wetland, a major fish breeding ground, bird habitat and international protected site for migratory birds. I can’t begin to imagine the quantities of plastic these creatures have consumed over the years. It will take a huge effort to clean this up.
